The shouting is over and directions for the next four years selected. Judging by past behavior (the best predictor, psychologically, of future behavior), we can look forward to: 1. Continued and probably expanded tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and large Corporations. It is no surprise that the stock market soared on the election news: big business stands to gain greatly by the results. Predictions? A strong effort to curtail product lawsuits, no matter how valid, to protect bottom line profits and continued tax incentives to offshore jobs to third world countries where labor costs are low, worker protections minimal, and profitability unlimited. 2. Protection of drug companies by barring pharmaceutical imports from Canada and discouragement of the formation of purchasing cartels for Medicare and other public programs. 3. Semi-privatization of Social Security leading to the emigration of higher paid young employees into private plans, unavoidably diminishing the influx of money available for current and future recipients. 4. Expanded funding for the morass of Iraq and support for the new Afghani government, benefiting the Haliburtons of the world rather than the American worker. 5. Increasing isolation throughout the world as the perceived "big bully of the west" shuns any support which demands shared power and responsible accountability. 6. A decreasing emphasis on job creation as it is no longer a political football and therefore a dead horse. The hope is that the unemployed will eventually take minimum wage service and temporary jobs, the only widely available positions, and business will reap the rewards. 7. The jury is still out on what may happen to a woman's right of choice and committed homosexual unions but we would be well-served to fear cultural values legislated by anyone. He did not care to speak with me off the record and wanted me to record and publish our conversation. He said he could no longer imagine talking to any American in a position of authority. He said he had been trying to do that for more than twenty years and the response was always; who are you that we should listen? He felt he had satisfactorily answered the question of who he was and noted that it produced no meanin… 2. I'm conservative, s/he's liberal Ah, politics- my favorite topic to see other people discuss. It's just so full of juicy issues, the only problem being that most of the time it creates some serious beef (that's hatred, for you non-hip people) among people with opposite points of view. Here we're going to try to gain a working knowledge of how to deal with differing political points of views among two close people (best friends, couples, etc). It isn't easy, but you can do itFirst thing to realize when in a heated political deba… 3. The focus of the media has mainly been on the most important of the races, the Presidential; however house and senate members are being voted on as well. This election may either make or break the Democrats. They may lose the Senate as well as lose more seats in the house or gain seats in the Senate and Reps. If the latter is the case, many great things will happen for the party. The cour… Warsaw Hotels 4. Is it just hubris, or ...? By Humair Ishtiaq In what the Americans love to describe as the war on terror, there have been no clear winners even though it has been physically going on now for over three years. By the looks of it, the tussle between the United States of America and its perceived enemy will outlast the Second World War at least in terms of duration, if nothing else. If so, it certainly represents a horrible scenario for the planet. What lies at the heart of the conflict between the two sides -- if, indeed, there is a second … |
