During last year's election it forced me to think of why many members of the "Social elite" like Dan Rather, Barbara Streisand, Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin are ultra liberal. It took me a while but I finally came up with a plausible answer. So why would the extremely wealthy "social elite" be so liberal?

1) They Live a Utopian Lifestyle - One of the reasons that the "Social elite" are extremely liberal is that they live a life that most of us can't even imagine or relate to. They have so much money, they don't even know what to to do with it and they can do just about anything. I think that they feel guilty that they have such wealth (they really don't have to), that they feel that they need to prove to society that they care or have a social conscience.

That's why they join groups like PETA. They think society will think highly of them. This is not true. I think that most of us pity these little people. We know that they don't really care and that they do most of their grand-standing for public attention

2) They Won't be harmed by the high cost of liberal/social policy - Yes that's right! The "social elite" wouldn't be harmed by the high cost of liberal policies or programs. If social welfare programs like comprehensive health care or expanded unemployment benefits were to be enacted, the "social elite" wouldn't be harmed by paying higher taxes, like the rest of us would. Many of these elites make tens of millions of dollars a year. If high taxes like Canada were put in place to pay for the high cost of social programs, these elites would still be extremely wealthy.

The "Social elite" can feel self righteous that they have a social conscience because they support liberal policies but they wouldn't be harmed by the high cost of paying for those programs. The rest of us (middle class) would be left behind to feel the pinch of the added burden of dipping into our pocket books.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development issued a report Monday that pointed out that even though the US proposals will yield a system that reaches the poor in a more redistributive way than many other countries, the average pay outs of the government pensions are rather low at around 51% of a retiree's previously earned salary as compared to over 70% in other OECD countries.Only New Zealand and Ireland outperform the US in reaching its poorest nationals because they have simp…

So Saddham Hussein--the 'sadman of Iraq,' murderer, and possessor of weapons of mass destruction--is finally caught like a rat. He was hiding in a 'spider hole,' in a farm near his hometown of Tikrit, not far from one of the palatial palaces that he had built for himself by the River Tigris. And everyone is raising a high five and slapping each other's back with the misguided belief that they have begun to see light at the end of the tunnel. They say that the road to Jerusalem and in fact to worl…

3. The Gun Control Debate By Kenny Du
The gun control debate in America is a battle between personal freedom and public safety. For nearly 160 years, there were no limits to the Second Amendment, which guarantees "the right of the people to keep and bear arms." In 1934, however, and especially in the last four decades, Americans have begun to proscribe and debate the extent of that right. The National Firearms Act of 1934 was the first restriction on gun rights in American history. As a result, fully automatic weapons are availabl…

4. Eurovision Song Contest - End this Embarassment
Tonight I resigned myself to the fact that this is the last Eurovision Song Contest I shall ever watch. In fairness the only reason I did watch it was due to media reports mentioning that steps had been taken to try and mitigate the blatant vote rigging that takes place each time the contest is aired. I should have known better.I suppose the early warning signs were there before I even sat down to witness this debacle. My mother has long stopped watching the show. When I spoke to her on the phon…
